To be fair, this should indeed work, the reason why I didn't get it to work is hitting a key is `self-insert-command', not `insert-char'... To make a little list (put 'insert-char 'delete-selection 'kill) (put ' ... 'delete-selection 'kill) ... (or even better, do a loop with all commands in a list) is probably more sound than what I did in [1], especially if the property is used by other functions. But it should amount to the same...
