Hello,

I have just downloaded and installed w3, using the default 'configure'
options. Everything seemed to go OK, but on invocation using 'm-x w3' I
get this error:

'Wrong type argument: number-ormarker-p, nil'.

I assume I messed up somewhere.

My system is:
Linux (RH6)
Gnu Emacs 21.1

I'm having the same problem. I posted a traceback not too long ago,
but so far no one has commented.

FWIW, the problem seems to occur whenever I try to read an HTML message.

Ah, it's in Gnus! I think that maybe the Gnus version is the
problem. Does it help if you try Oort? Can anybody say?

I don't think it has anything to do with gnus. Even do a M-x w3 will give
the same problem.

I think I might have had the same problem. I hacked around it --there
was something screwy about the way it was getting font information or
something-- but didn't bother to record the changes since someone
recommend w3m instead, which works better, although it has its share
of problems, too.

Installing w3m was pretty painless, plus it is (probably) faster.

i did the same. it had to do with the fonts, i NOP'ed the functions
responsible, sent in the bug report and my work-around, monitored the
newsgroups and got nothing. very few non-japanese postings at all,
and posts by non-japanese people are completely ignored.

plus you can update more easily via their CVS.

I am assuming that whatever is wrong with my w3,
is pointed out by 'invalid-function...', but I
don't know where to start looking for answers.

Debugger entered--Lisp error: (invalid-function (macro . #[(handle) "ÁÂ\bE‡" [handle nth 2] 3]))
mm-handle-encoding((#<buffer *mm*<2>> ("text/html") nil nil nil nil nil nil))
w3-decode-charset((#<buffer *mm*<2>> ("text/html") nil nil nil nil nil nil))
  w3-fetch-callback("http://www.cs.indiana.edu/elisp/w3/docs.html")
  apply(w3-fetch-callback "http://www.cs.indiana.edu/elisp/w3/docs.html")
  url-http-activate-callback()
  url-http-content-length-after-change-function(289 3250 2961)
  url-http-wait-for-headers-change-function(1 3250 3249)
  url-http-generic-filter(#<process www.cs.indiana.edu>

Please point me in the right direction to find
the answer to what is wrong with my installation
of w3.

Not an answer to your question, but w3 isn't active developed
anymore. For a nice emacs web browser I suggest emacs-w3m:

Add (require 'mml) to w3.el and recompile it.

I have,

;;; bbdb
(require 'bbdb)
(bbdb-initialize 'w3)
(bbdb-insinuate-w3)

in my .emacs and when I started a new build,

GNU Emacs 23.0.91.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.14.4) of
2009-03-23 on g41r2f1

I heard a bell and checked *Messages*, which said, ``cannot locate
feature `w3'.''

I am still able to do `w' on a BBDB entry and BBDB fetches the URL. I
just didn't notice an error, as in above, upon start up before.

Since W3 is not bundled with Emacs, I don't see which part you'd
consider to be a problem. Is it just a misunderstanding or am
I missing something?

Great, thanks, that was an easy fix.
