Just out of curiosity -

Emacs 24 is not released yet. Yet the dot number of the `emacs-version'
numbering just changed for the first time since builds began for Emacs 24.

The previous non-pretest Windows build, on 3/19, had this: 24.0.94.1. The last
Windows pretest build, on 4/02, had this: 24.0.95.1.

But now we're up to 24.1. The non-pretest Windows build from 4/19 has this:
24.1.50.1. Why 24.1 now? Did we pass some milestone?

There's a new branch emacs-24 from which 24.1 will be released. Builds
from that branch currently have emacs-version 24.0.95. So the trunk
was "upgraded" to 24.1.50 to distinguish them.

The version from the trunk is not really very important. If after 24.1
is released there's the need to make another release 24.2 from the
emacs-24 branch (because of an urgent security fix, a serious mistake
in the 24.1 release, whatever), the trunk would be upgraded to
24.2.50.

Thanks for the explanation.

Presumably in such a case, the emacs-24 branch will get the version
24.1.51 (or 60, 40, 49; or go straight to pretest as 24.1.90) to avoid
confusion between the trunk and branch.
