My machine runs Linux Woody Debian and Emacs20; I don't get to edit .doc
files on Emacs20, what should I do? Please, I urge this notice!

Quite easy. Install the antiword package and run:
antiword example.doc > new.doc && mv new.doc example.doc && emacs example.doc

I think you need Open Office to edit those closed-format documents.
