Hello,

are there any reasons why '.' and ':' have word syntax in
man mode?

Because some man pages have these characters in their names (I believe
there's a comment to that effect in man.el), and man.el picks up the
word around point to provide the cross-reference feature, whereby you
can jump to the referenced man page.

Why is that a problem?

Just that character movement in man buffers behaves
different from what i expected (I noticed it when i copied a
"symbol" from a man page to some C code with C-M-SPC M-w).
