dieter@debby:/usr/bin/X11$ xmodmap -pke | grep -i alt
keycode  64 = Alt_L Meta_L
keycode 125 = NoSymbol Alt_L

I do not quite understand, to reach the "{" on a German keyboard I do
not need a Shift key.  But don't mind, I'm clueless anyway ;-).
