Newsticker starts firefox, but my preferred browser is konq.
There is a standard for determining the preferred browser (on linux, at
least), but I don't recall the name of it.

Newsticker just follows the Emacs standard ;) It calls `browse-url'
which uses `browse-url-browser-function' which, if undefined, defaults
to `browse-url-default-browser` which attempts to find a browser. You
should change `browse-url-browser-function'. Then again, one might teach
browse-url-default-browser to follow the standard you are referring to.
