Evaluating
(wildcard-to-regexp "*.cc *.cxx *.cpp *.C *.CC *.c++")
returns
"\\`[^^@]*\\.cc [^^@]*\\.cxx [^^@]*\\.cpp [^^@]*\\.C [^^@]*\\.CC [^^@]*\\.c\\+\\+\\'"
Do you think it should be
"\\`[^^@]*\\.cc\\|[^^@]*\\.cxx\\|[^^@]*\\.cpp\\|[^^@]*\\.C\\|[^^@]*\\.CC\\|[^^@]*\\.c\\+\\+\\'"
?
