Emacs chokes on the irregular "[DOCSTRING]" argument:
(defun NAME ARGLIST [DOCSTRING] BODY...)
You have to provide an explicit ARGLIST:
(defadvice FUNCTION (CLASS NAME [POSITION] [ARGLIST] FLAG...)
[DOCSTRING] [INTERACTIVE-FORM]
BODY...)
