Step to reproduce:
chep@Zorglub:~$ emacs -Q --daemon
chep@Zorglub:~$ emacsclient -nw --alternate-editor=""

Behaviour:
Server crashes. No readable message. Console output is broken and I need
to call the reset command.

There is no problem with the -c option:
I start client with
  emacsclient -c --alternate-editor=""
and it works fine.

I'm afraid I can't reproduce this.  Please see if the crash also happens
if you run "emacs -Q -nw -f server-start" instead of
"emacs -Q --daemon".  If so, get a gdb backtrace, and post it.
