If you configured that, remove the configuration to get
the default behavior back, of course.
Check out the .emacs and .gnus files. (And all files
that are loaded from those files as well.)

Somehow gnus is opening a new window to the right of its group window to
read emails, but its not what I want. How can I stop this please and
just have it opening with the group pane above the message pane? IOW,
getting its default behaviour back again.
Thanks
Sharon.

I've got everything working nicely again by -
- using an old backup version of gnus dated 31-08-14
- ran it and the problem still remained, so it wasn't being caused by my
gnus file
- looked at all my setup files but couldn't see anything that would
account for this behaviour
- looked at all ELPA updates for the past week, as it only seems to have
occurred in that time period. And lo and behold, I have "eh-gnus"
loaded in.
- looked at 'eh.gnus.el' but couldn't see that it was causing the
problem, so as I wasn't using it I deleted with the emacs package
manager.
- restarted emacs, restarted gnus, and the problem has gone away! So its
part of the configuration of "eh-gnus" which was causing the problem,
and deleting it cured the problem! :)
Thanks folks
Sharon.
