BTW, I wonder if this is really needed. Obviously I thought it was,
since I added this byte-recompile-directory, but package.el does call
byte-recompile-directory and AFAIK that works recursively, so it should
already DTRT.

Yes, you are right. I've removed the call and released 11.88.1.
