It's not /that/ bad.  See variable tramp-foreign-file-name-handler-alist.
Of course, plugging into Tramp is not necessary, just an option.

But I think tramp-foreign-file-name-handler-alist is not the best
option in this case, directly using file-name-handler-alist is better.
