Do you have the font? If you want terminus, you have to get it from http://www.is-vn.bg/hamster/jimmy-en.html --- I really like it ;) Use xfontsel: pick a family that you like, then hit the "select" button, and then middle-click into the frame where you're editing .Xdefaults. Then do 'xrdb .Xdefaults' and then restart Emacs. I have never had a problem putting in as many asterisks as there were in xfontsel, although it's a good idea to narrow it down to a spacing (spc), registry (rgistry) and encoding (encding).
