Here's an attempt at a relevant macro:
C-n C-d 1
C-p DEL 0
C-b
This replaces the character at point to 0, and the one below it to 1.
Now go into xdisp.c and set display-line-numbers to t:
M-g c 2960
C-17 C-n
C-x e
Notice that it's the previous columns that are changed, and not the
current column.
