find-file-root does not work

find-file-root does not work

Hi all,

since I set up debian (testing) anew find-file-root does not
work anymore. It once worked with any emacs (21, 22 and 23
which I use currently), now with none of them, neither
invoked with -q.

But if I do a ssh - l root localhost 
in a terminal I have no problem to login.

What can I do?
