Hi together

I updated Emacs-Snapshot on Debian Etch two days ago. Since then, all
italic and bold fonts are displayed in a tiny, almost illegible
fontsize. It happens only under X.

Additionally, since the update, Emacs starts with a rapid flickering
frame, changing its size from fullscreen to a few centimeters and back
again several times until the program is up.

Does anybody where the problem could be and how to solve it?

I'm using abobe-courier as default font. I should add that there were
also updates for X.org coming with the same update.

Thanks for help

Sven

It seem emacs start with default fonts because it don't find anymore
your adobe-courier fonts (or don't recognize ?)
which version of emacs is it?

It's 23.0.60.1.

I will try to change the default font to see if this works better.

Seems related. My current version is 23.0.60.1.

Don't think so. I think the old version was replaced with the new one
by aptitude.

Ho! it's an emacs unicode, you have to use bitstream font or dejavu
fonts, here my config:(work with emacs unicode and non unicode)

(if (charsetp 'unicode-bmp)

It's working better now. I use your code above but the font is too
small for me. I changed the line (set-default-font "Bitstream Vera
Sans Mono-12:weight=bold")) to:

,----
| (set-default-font "DejaVu Sans-20:weight=medium"))
`----

However, "customize-faces default" says, the default font is
"unknown-dejavu sans". Something still seems not correct.

Also, there are still some fontsizes unavailable. Depending on the
default size (I tried 12, 16, 18, and finally 20), either the \part{}
and \section{} headings or the \chapter{} and \section{} headings in AucTeX again
turn up tiny. I think, the pre-defined font sizes for these faces are
unavailable. Is it possible to build them?

At least italic and bold fonts are visible now. I liked adobe-courier
more.

Greetings

Sven

Yes, I want to (make) have fun! I'm not interested in money and
similiar nonsense.

At the end of January the two GNU Emacs versions from CVS, then known
as 23.0.50 and 23.0.60 (the unicode-2 branch) were merged into one
version: GNU Emacs 23.0.60, the main CVS branch now.

The version from one week later (2008-02-24) works OK for me.

How are you setting the default font?

Try specifying a font on the command line when you start emacs. Note
also that I believe that emacs-snapshot is built with the
--endable-font-backend. this means you can use things like

emacs-snapshot -fn "Bitstream Sans Mono-10"

but of course, you need to have the appropriate fonts installed.

It's called voodoo.el. We are applying to become an official sect of
the Church of Emacs, but Richard still worries about our conformity
with orthodoxy, since we open our ritual techniques only to initiates.

Sounds a bit like emasonics.el.

Or you could keep the latest snapshot and use --disable-font-backend,

I've found that even if you have built emacs with --enable-font-backend,
you can still use the normal fonts. I wasn't even aware that (for
example) your emacs-snapshot was being built with --enable-font-backend
and had just left my .Xresources Emacs.font: as it always has been - no
issues and no observable difference from earlier versions of either
emacs-snapshot or running emacs22.

I am currently dealing with a very odd problem though. I have two
machines, both running Debian. One one machine (this one) both
emacs-snapshot and an emacs I've built myself from CVS are working
fine. No issues.

However, on the other machine I get weird errors about void function
definitions, signal 11 segfaults, and other 'weirdness' in both the
latest emacs-snapshot and emacs built from CVS. The only real difference
between the two machines is that the one I'm having problems with has
been running Debian since 2001, upgrading from (I think)
potato/woody. The other machine was a fresh Debian install about 12
months ago. I suspect it could be some bit of 'kruft' left over from a
dist upgrade. Frustrating because its my work machine and I've not got
time to chase down the problme just now. Had to revert back to emacs22
until I get time to sort things out.

LibXft can be a problem – this is true in Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger):
libXft is obviously too old here.

Recent GNU Emacs 23.0.60 is able to use more than one font backend:
X11, Freetype, Xft:

	!Emacs.FontBackend:	x
	!Emacs.FontBackend:	xft
	!Emacs.FontBackend:	ftx

Since some days you can combine backends:

	Emacs.FontBackend:	x,xft

There can also be another source of problems: libfontconfig. It has
to be modern, too, to allow to select fonts by certain properties.

Running Emacs under gdb and getting debug traces would be a good
starting point. You can also install the apt-show-versions package
and compare the output on your two machines--you may have installed
an library package from a third party a few years ago and forgotten
about it. Also run 'debsums -ca', just in case: it will list the
files which have changed on your system compared to their pristine
packaged version.

thanks Pete. Actually, my problems now appear to be hardware
based. Looks like I've developed some bad memory in my system. However,
the stuff you provided on specifying the font backend is very
interesting and I will be experimenting to see what, if any,
differences I get.

Thanks for the suggestions. It turns out I appear to have a memory error
- the box is getting a bit long in the tooth and I actually have a
replacement one - just haven't got around to migrating. Now migration is
a higher priority!

If you want help about code that's in-development, you might be better
served on pretest-emacs-bug@gnu.org or emacs-devel@gnu.org.
