Scorched earth, build the world from scratch. Otherwise, you *will* occasionally lose. Most people are happy losing very occasionally if it saves a fair amount of time on each pseudo-bootstrap, but AIUI Randal professes a far more exacting standard. Either that, or he's pretty unlucky and loses on a fairly large fraction of his bootstraps. Anyway, "make distclean" is the way to minimize bootstrap lossage. As far as the ./configure line itself goes, sure, you want to save that. But there are plenty of ways to do that.
