Today I don't know how I could read my mail without it. Gnus is actively maintained. For more information visit [1] and [2]. Beside the mail clients you mentioned there's another one which seems to be quite good - Wanderlust [3]. I never used it, so look for more information on its homepage (if you're able to read japanese ;-) ).
