I often structure my TODO lists like so:
* TODO a bunch of stuff
- [ ] thing 1
- [ ] thing 2
...
I would like to clock the time spent on thing1 and thing2, however it
seems that all clock operations only pertain to the main * TODO
heading. Is there a way to clock the subitems?
Thanks,

Change the list into subheadings and then clock against those.
* TODO a bunch of stuff
** TODO Thing 1
** TODO Thing 2
and you just mark the Things as DONE instead of checking them off.
