Not strictly under all circumstances, but I'd prefer not to turn it into symbolic notation of file permissions such as drwxr-xr-x :-) Maybe it's possible to keep 1 character, and highlight it with different faces, e.g. dimmed out for obsolete, red for advised, etc.
