Debian is a very good Linux distribution but that shouldn't limit your Emacs experience if you are a fan of the software. And it doesn't, since getting and installing the latest Emacs version on Debian is almost as easy as installing it from the repositories! I have my shell function commands [1] but I've heard of people doing backporting as well.
