Would there be any interest in a monthly 1-2 hour long ad-hoc screen
sharing and video discussion for Org-mode?

I'm offering to schedule and moderate the first few events. I'd
propose a Saturday meeting in the afternoon European time to cover EU
and NA.

I'm considering using Jitsi, or maybe GNU Jami.

Topics could include Q&A, demonstrations of features, interactive
troubleshooting, etc. I hadn't considered presentations, but
that could be an option too.

Comments?

Would be great to see what others are doing in their workflows using org ;-)

I'd like to join to!

Cheers,

Great idea!

Me too, though it depends on the schedule. What time of day do you plan
for that?

I would enjoy a video meetup on Orgmode, since it is the first and last program I interact with during my computing day.

Great idea. I would like to participate, even if it was just to listen
:-) But I'm afraid that these months I'm going to have horrible
schedules. Is it planned to record these meetings?

I can't commit to recording initially. I can't run them forever
either, but I'm happy to start the ball rolling.

Perhaps recording in the future?

Even if there is a recording, where can we publish the recorded videos?

Exactly.

Recording brings with it extra logistics, which is why I deferred the
issue. ;]

If we get more than a couple of people, this can certainly be interesting.

I was just asking, out of curiosity, if it was planned to be published.
I really don't know where it could be published. I know PeerTube exists,
but I don't know how it works.

There is the YouTube option, which I imagine no one would like (me
neither). The only thing in its favor is that Invidious can be used to
watch the videos. BTW, I watch YT videos through Invidious in Emacs,
with the Ytel package and EMMS/MPV.

Best regards,

Juan Manuel

I would try to join.

One thing I always mention when conversations about recording come up is
that if you promote recordings as a resource, it is considered good form to
have transcription available. I'm pretty sure a community effort like this
world be under no ADA obligations (unlike company meetings) but still good
form.

I have written a bunch of homemade hacks for ytel, including the ability
to display video thumbnails in the results. I explain all the details on
my blog, here:

The post is in Spanish. If anyone is interested in this topic, I can
write a version in English.

I simply use

#+begin_src bash :tangle ~/.local/bin/qutebrowser-call.sh :shebang #!/bin/bash
URL="$1"

if echo "$URL" | grep "youtube.com"; then
    # URL="$(echo "$URL" | sed -r 's/\\(www\\)?youtube\.com/invidious.namazso.eu/')"
    if [[ ! -z $(echo "$URL" | grep "/watch") ]]; then
	mpv $URL && exit;
    fi
fi

if echo "$URL" | grep "ted.com/talks"; then
	mpv $URL && exit;
fi

# if echo "$URL" | grep "reddit.com"; then
# URL="$(echo "$URL" | sed -rE 's/www\.reddit\.com/libredd.it/')"
# fi

if echo "$URL" | grep "bilibili.com"; then
    mpv $URL && exit;
fi

grep "$URL" ~/.data/web-mirror/sources/* >/dev/null 2>&1 &&\
    ARCHIVE_DIR="$(echo "$URL" | archivebox-cmd list 2>/dev/null | tail -n1 | cut -d' ' -f1  | sed -r 's|/data|~/.data/web-mirror|')"

if [[ ! -z "$ARCHIVE_DIR" ]]; then
    [[ -f "${ARCHIVE_DIR}/singlefile.html" ]] && URL="${ARCHIVE_DIR}/singlefile.html";
fi

#from https://github.com/qutebrowser/qutebrowser/blob/master/scripts/open_url_in_instance.sh
_url="$URL"
_command=":later 4000 :jump-mark last-position"

qutebrowser "${_command}" ":spawn -u untrack-url -r -O ${_url}"

#+end_src

and my mpv is configured to use youtube-dl.

In this short video I show an example of my procedure to watch youtube
videos without leaving Emacs:

https://cloud.disroot.org/s/X3cfi2orT38CPyM

I use:

1. Helm-google-suggest (set to use duckduckgo)

2. Ytel (based on elfeed). With a few hacks that I have added, in order
to:

  - Display thumbnails in the searches.

  - Watch the video at point (via invidious) with EMMS/MPV,
configured with yt-dlp, which is a fork of youtube-dl that works
    much better.

  - Download the video at point with yt-dlp (full video or only audio)

  - Create a bookmark of the video with org-capture

More info on my blog in Spanish (if anyone is interested, I can translate it):

Best regards,

Juan Manuel

Hi all,

I’m super happy to see the interest in getting an org-mode usergroup off
the ground! I’m even happier about the fact that we could help you
address the technical and logistical issues that have been raised in
this thread.

Since EmacsConf 2020, Sacha and I have been working with Emacs usergroup
organizers to provide them with the tools needed to publicize, host, and
record their sessions. We have a page on the EmacsWiki which lists all
the usergroups we know of: https://www.emacswiki.org/emacs/Usergroups

For the recording problem at hand, we’d be able to offer you access to
a BigBlueButton (BBB) [0] instance running on a server we own (kindly
provided to us by Fosshost). BBB provides server-side recording for all
audio and video feeds, and we’ve been using it to record and publish the
live Q&A with EmacsConf speakers without problems.

George Mauer <gmauer@gmail.com> writes:

> One thing I always mention when conversations about recording come up

Captions are also something we could help you with! Last year, for
EmacsConf 2021, we managed to get almost all the talks captioned before
broadcast thanks to our team of volunteers. This year, we’ve improved
our process by introducing speech recognition via OpenAI Whisper [1],
and we’ve been pretty happy with the results. We’d be happy to help you
get set up for captioning too, especially if there’s a great talk you’d
like to extract and share.

Let me know what you're interested in and we’ll set you up with
everything. :)

Notes:
[0] BigBlueButton (BBB) is FLOSS Video conferencing suite. For details,
    see: https://bigbluebutton.org/

There seems to be general interest.

Do you plan to start the meetups any time soon?
If you do, we may also ask Timothy to announce it during his "This year
in Org" talk at Emacsconf.

I've been really busy with work. I got a new Emacs BlueButton account
I need to test, and then I'll make an initial presentation on a topic.

Perhaps I can schedule one later this month.

To clarify, Timothy's presentation is going to be in December.
It would be great if you finalize how committed you can be to this by
then. Both from technical point of view and from your free time
availability.

For the sake of the talk, it would have to be worked out a bit sooner actually.
I’ll most likely be submitting a recording next weekend.

All the best,
Timothy

I hadn't intended this to conflict with anything else. I was hoping to
start a routine meeting, and like I said my time was constrained where
I hadn't started yet.

Would it be better to wait and schedule something after Emacsconf?

Let's pick a Saturday one or two weeks after EmacsConf. Then we can
announce it either during Timothy's talk or during the live Q&A after
Timothy's talk in case the details don't get ironed out this weekend.
People can share what they picked up at the conference, and I can show the
Org files I use to manage EmacsConf behind the scenes. (Babel, SVG, mail
merge, todo state hooks, ...)

I am probably more available at 8 AM EST than in the afternoon (kiddo likes
to sleep in), but I might be able to swing 1-3 PM EST especially if it'll
be Dec 17 instead of Dec 10. Would either Dec 10 or 17 work for anyone, and
can I get away with 8 AM (good for Europe and Asia, doable for Eastern,
tough for Pacific time) or do we need 1-3pm EST?

Sacha

Sorry, I think made a false impression in my message.
I just thought that Emacsconf could be great opportunity to invite wide
audience to these meetings. But we need to be sure that the meetings are
going to happen---there is no point announcing a meeting that will not
happen.

There is no need to postpone anything. If you can start regular meetings
earlier, it will be great.

One of my concerns is the format. I used to goto user groups
frequently, and we could break up into smaller groups working on many
things.

On the other hand, tools like BBB or Jitsi tend to be best for a
presenter and an audience.

I'm ok with prepping a presentation and a sample org file or two, and
answering questions in a group setting.

Does anyone know an open conferencing solution that allows smaller
workgroups within a larger unit?

BBB has breakout rooms. I haven't experimented with them, but it looks like
you can set them up so that people can join the one they want, be randomly
assigned, or be manually assigned to one.
https://support.blindsidenetworks.com/hc/en-us/articles/360024516512-Create-and-manage-breakout-rooms
describes features and limitations. Might be something to play with on
bbb.emacsverse.org? Maybe we'll give it a try at EmacsConf too, like having
a general hangout during lunch break. Might be fun!

I am not sure if we even need to worry about multiple rooms. AFAIK,
Emacs meetups generally do not gather more than a dozen of people max.

I suggest you to try running an actual meetup first and see how many
people show up. It is not like you plan a single event and need to
account for all the possible scenarios. If there are too many people, we
can adjust the format in the later meetings.

I used to attend the Houston Linux User's Group for a decade, in
person. We were hosted in a computer lab, and we'd alternate between
having a presentation and a workshop.

My point was not everyone wants a presentation. In person user groups
used to break up into small groups to solve a problem or check out a
neat solution, and people would drift between them.

That's making a time and place for everyone to meet, but then do as
they like among each other.

I'm happy to give a presentation, but would rather encourage a regular
meeting which is more of a group workshop.

This is an interesting idea to try. (I am more used to presentation +
free-for-all discussions.)

As Sacha pointed, we should be able to create breakaway rooms in BBB.
So, I will let you decide the format. What you have in mind sounds quite
interesting.

Russell, are you available at some point during EmacsConf? Testing breakout
rooms in a group workshop / unconference thing might be fun with more
participants. Based on last year's Q&A experience, you might get 30 people
or so (or maybe more, if you run it over lunch break or next to a more
niche talk). I can probably figure out how to add it to the schedule
whenever you want.

It could work like this:
- first 5-15 minutes, people propose topics to talk about while you write
them down in a screenshared text editor (Emacs, of course). Might have an
informal show of virtual hands (not webcam, that makes the performance bad
if there are lots of people; just use the raise hands thing) to make sure
people aren't going to be waiting by themselves
- you create the breakout rooms and people join the ones they want
- they discuss; people can come back to the main room and join other things
- you can check in on them if you want
- maybe a report back if people want?

Could be a peer-to-peer help thing, could be an Org thing, could be
last-minute demos, could be whatever the participants want...

If you or anyone wants to experiment with this, let me know what time you
want to schedule it!

Sacha

Oh, actually, we can make an Etherpad for you, and then participants can
edit the list themselves. So I think all the moderator needs to do is to
create the breakout rooms and help people figure out what to do, which
could be partially handled by instructions in the pad.

Alternatively, LibrePlanet experimented with LibreAdventure (based on
https://workadventu.re/) and minetest for more of that "walking around near
interesting things" feeling. Is that potentially interesting too?

What do you mean by "a screenshared text editor (Emacs, of course)"? Do
you mean Rudel? There are some options in

I meant something even simpler, actually - just someone using BBB's share
screen feature to share whatever people are using (Emacs or Etherpad) to
list the breakout rooms and their topics.

I’d be interested. Might get more people to contribute to the codebase.

Weekends Saturday afternoons would be best for me, I don’t know about
anyone else.

Are we talking Zoom here?

I'm interested. I've thought of proposing something similar, yet hesitated to because topics and decisions made in a video chat wouldn't be captured on list. To me, that record is important.

FSF associate members have access to a FSF hosted Jitsi instance. I'm an FSF associate member and could host it using that if I'm able to make the time.

We can make EmacsConf instance of BigBlueButton (BBB) available, as
well. FWIW I had more success with BBB than Jitsi for larger
meetings.

That's generally been my experience, too. Glad to hear that's an available option. Hopefully we can bring this to fruition.

As in each month having a different timing? I might have understood this wrong
but won't this mean that, for example the Europe group would have a meeting
every 3 months? Please tell me if I'm wrong.

I suggest having a monthly meeting per region such that each group meets once a
month, for example the first Sunday, second Sunday and third Sunday.

As for the day I'd prefer a Saturday as my weekends occur on Friday/Saturday but
I understand this is not the norm.

Nope. But regardless the time chosen, one of these three groups of
people will have night. Two others will not.

So it is 2 meetings every 3 months.
Frequency may be different.

Of course, that will require at least two hosts living in appropriate
time zones.

That would require 3 hosts or more commitment from 1-2 hosts.

I guess the question is who is willing to do the hosting.

I have no opinion wrt Fri/Sat/Sun, or other days.

There are several other general Emacs meetups:

Emacs APAC: "We meet every fourth Saturday of the month (<%%(diary-float t 6 4)> in Org mode)"

Emacs Berlin: last Wednesday every month

Emacs NYC: "We get together the first Monday of every month for Emacs related activities."

M-x research: "We meet virtually every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of every month at 4pm (UK time)"

I live in +3 GMT, I can not at the moment host due to college

I was given an account on https://bbb.emacsverse.org/, and trying to
use it today I get a certificate expired error that cannot be ignored.

I was hoping to test it to setup a Saturday video session.

Any ideas?

I am also seeing the same error.
Looks like they forgot to update the certificate.
It expired a month ago.

This thread had no activity for a while.
Let me take the lead then.

I am now in UTC+3 zone and can host a meetup in the evening my time
(~6-10pm).

Say, early next month. Like Aug 9. (Alternative suggestions welcome; I
just randomly selected something no too far and no too close from now.)

I will need a BBB account though.

Hello, Ihor!

Thanks for taking the lead! I've sent you an invite from bbb.emacsverse.org.
Once you decide on a time and date, please let me know a week or two
beforehand so that I can put it in Emacs News. Do you want to go with Aug 9
at 6pm UTC+3? I can't make it (still focused on kiddo), but maybe if at
least one or two other people confirm, then that could be a good starting
point and we can see who else shows up.

Sacha

Feel free to suggest an alternative date in August.
My main constraint is that time should be in the evening.
Can be any date others are comfortable with.

The date works for me and I have no issue with changing the date, as for
the time it has to be in the evening UTC+3 (5-9pm). Thank you for
taking the lead Ihor.

Thank you very much Sachac and Igor. I would love to attend. I bet a
lot of other people would also. I would expect about 10.

Dear all,

A number of people expressed interest in a dedicated Org meetup.
So, let's start it.

URL: https://bbb.emacsverse.org/b/iho-h7r-qg8-led
Time & Date: <2023-08-09 Wed 19:00-21:00 @+03,Europe/Istanbul>
The room will be open half an hour before the official start.

During the meetup, we can:

- Give advice to new users
- Showcase Org configs or workflows
- Demo/discuss interesting packages
- Troubleshoot each-other's issues
- Discuss "Org mode" section of Emacs news (https://sachachua.com/blog/)
- Discuss anything else Org-related

Everyone is free to join the discussion/chat or lurk around silently, listening.

We will _not_ do any recording by default.

Hello everyone,

Apologies for the late reply.

What time are we planning the meetup? Is it 9th August 18:00 UTC? that
would be 19:00 BST and would work for me.

Ravi

Great. 17:00 BST should work for me.

Is there any agenda for this meetup? Also where are we meeting?

Thanks everyone who participated! We had quite a few people by Emacs
meetup standards.

Here is a short summary of the main discussion points (those that I
remember):

- Adham Omran announced his new package for Anki (flash card/spaced
  repetition) integration:
  https://github.com/adham-omran/ankifier
Efficiently create Anki flashcards from your notes.

- Ilya Cheryshov announced his new package to display agenda time grid
as _interactive_ svg image. Looks like the usual Google calendar view,
  but inside Emacs.
  https://github.com/ichernyshovvv/org-timeblock/
  Org mailing list discussion: https://list.orgmode.org/87edkc85fl.fsf@localhost/T/#t

  - Similar, but ASCII-only package:
https://github.com/ml729/calfw-blocks, based on Calfw Emacs calendar framework.

- More on visualizing Org statistics:
  - https://github.com/rksm/clj-org-analyzer/: clocking data visualizer
using web-frontend. Features heatmap view of clocking time
    per-day. Allows filtering by tags.
  - https://github.com/Elilif/org-heatmap/: monthly heatmap for habit tracking
  - A bit tangent, but illustrates how to make use of time clocking:
    https://samplesize.one/blog/posts/my_year_in_data/
    - One more article I did not mention during the meetup:
      https://sqrtminusone.xyz/posts/2023-04-13-emacs/

- [[info:eintr#Top][eintr#Top]] Elisp introduction for non-programmers. This is really a
well-written manual worth reading if your config is larger than a few
  lines.

- yantar92's window manager: Awesome WM https://awesomewm.org/

- https://git.sr.ht/~bzg/worg is the source code of Org WIKI (WORG)
[ Contributions welcome: a number of articles really need some love there ]
  - We also have some Org internals documented as articles in WORG.

- Meeting report export template (backend):
  https://github.com/DarkBuffalo/ox-report
which reminded me of actual LaTeX template by Tecosaur (Org dev): https://github.com/tecosaur/BMC

- New WIP fast LaTeX preview system with instant preview as you type
  - Demo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-AfvuV-bYo
  - Another demo previously posted on the mailing list:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-AfvuV-bYo
  - And the mailing list discussion with more details: https://list.orgmode.org/orgmode/87lek2up0w.fsf@tec.tecosaur.net/

- =#+begin_src :<tab>= will give you completion of header arguments
  - Same for #+ keywords and, sometimes, for their values (like for #+TAGS: <tab>)
  - The underlying code is in lisp/org-pcomplete.el
  - Also, see org-eldoc (part of org-contrib): https://git.sr.ht/~bzg/org-contrib/tree/master/item/lisp/org-eldoc.el

- Collaboration using Org mode
  - Concurrent editing options are not great, unfortunately:
    - https://code.librehq.com/qhong/crdt.el (need Emacs for all sides)
    - https://logseq.com/: similar to notion/obsidian, but supports Org syntax
  - Can use Git, if not real-time. Org is just a plain text.
  - I also used email workflow using pdf export -> sending email ->
getting pdf with comments back -> modifying Org source -> ...

- Authoring books/thesis in Org
  - Adham Omran wrote his thesis in Arabic using Org mode
    - Emacs has built-in right-to-left language support
      [[info:emacs#Bidirectional Editing][emacs#Bidirectional Editing]]
    - Right-to-left may be mixed with left-to-right (English) in Org
export, though some LaTeX-specific tweaking may be needed.
      - Org offers _some_ help with #+LANGUAGE document keyword
(see [[info:org#LaTeX specific export settings][org#LaTeX specific export settings]])
	- Also, https://list.orgmode.org/orgmode/87h6z7jq4o.fsf@localhost/
    - There was a question about XeLaTeX, but, AFAIK, event normal
LaTeX can support Arabic and other Unicode languages with
polyglossia package. Although fonts may be tricky to set and a
number of people opt-in to LuaTeX/XeLaTeX for smoother
experience (the downside is that non-LaTeX may not always be an
      option in real-life publisher requirements)
    - Examples from Org mailing list on complex typesetting while keeping sources in Org mode
      - https://list.orgmode.org/orgmode/87y1yovcip.fsf@posteo.net/
      - The bi-lingual book I mentioned:
        https://list.orgmode.org/orgmode/87h70tyyiz.fsf@posteo.net/

- Adham Omran wrote colemak input method for Arabic (only qwerty-based
variant is available by default in Emacs)
  - I suggested submitting it as a patch for Emacs core.

- On the Emacs fringe indicators showing buffer begin/end
  - ↑↓ indicate that there is more text above/below the screen
  - 「」 indicate begin/end of the buffer text within displayed part of the buffer
  - These can be enabled using ~(setq-default indicate-buffer-boundaries 'left)~

- Using ~helm-org-ql~ for searching across knowledge base, git commits, and emails
  - I modify the default ~org-ql~ search adding a number of shortcuts to quickly filter by tag/todo keyword
    - https://github.com/yantar92/emacs-config/blob/master/config.org#trying-org-ql
      - My modifications are tailored to my own fork of org-ql: https://github.com/yantar92/org-ql
      - Although the particular special feature I used here (custom
default org-ql predicate) is already implemented upstream,
        though using different defcustom.
    - I have a custom helm search, unifying org-ql, notmuch search
(for emails), and git commit search
      - https://github.com/yantar92/emacs-config/blob/master/config.org#helm-org-ql
      - I also add custom helm actions to insert bookmark/commit/email
Urls or Org links right from helm search.

Thank you, I've been using the ~unstable~ branch for about 8 months now,
so I moved it to the ~master~ branch. If anyone finds any issue please
open an issue with it!

I'll check it out tomorrow, that would be my first patch to the Emacs
core, any resource suggestions?

You can simply use M-x report-emacs-bug, describe what you have, and ask
for further directions.

If you want to submit an actual patch, it is a similar procedure. Prots
recently described all the steps in
https://protesilaos.com/codelog/2023-08-03-contribute-core-emacs/

Was unable to attend due to a power outage. Is this going to be a
monthly/semi monthly meetup? Is the next one scheduled already?

Not scheduled yet. I am tentatively thinking about the second Wednesday
of September (Wed, Sep 13).

Another idea is to have the meetup scheduled ~2 weeks from now, but at
different time. So that we cover Asia/Pacific time zone without forcing
people to attend at midnight and arrange the time around 6-8pm UTC+8.
But I will need some volunteer to be the host.

I recall that Ravi expressed interest in hosting a meetup (correct me if
I am wrong). Though his time zone might not be the best to synchronize
with Asia/Pacific.

Thanks for organizing this! It was a good session, and I picked up a few tips
and things to try out. Seeing the Arabic dissertation was a highlight. It was
also interesting seeing how others make great use of some parts of Org I use
very little. And of course just seeing what someone else's Emacs looks like is
always fun.

(For those who weren't there: No one had their camera on, it was screen-sharing
and people talking.)
