I think this issue isn't worth the time that's been spent on it. I've reverted some of your changes on the branch. Your removal of ns-set-alpha and ns-set-background-alpha is fine. However, I restored the code that supports alpha channel internally. I think this is an acceptable compromise, so let's stop arguing about this now.
