There is a reference to `gnus-custom-mode-hook' in the docstring of
`gnus-custom-mode'. However, I can't find this hook variable anywhere
in the sources and it is not used as advertised in `gnus-custom-mode'.
Should this reference just be removed, like in the attached patch?

It's just an automatically-generated mode hook, like all the others, it
doesn't need to be referenced in gnus-cus.el code.
C-h v gnus-custom-mode-hook
gnus-custom-mode-hook is a variable defined in ‘gnus-cus.el’.
Its value is nil
This variable may be risky if used as a file-local variable.
Documentation:
Hook run after entering Gnus Customize mode.
No problems result if this variable is not bound.
‘add-hook’ automatically binds it. (This is true for all hook variables.)
