Based on what's in iso-transl.el, C-x 8 [ will insert a single quote (and similarly C-x 8 { double quotes). Personally I prefer A-[ and A-{ I agree it would be very useful if C-u C-x = mentioned those bindings instead of or in addition to the hex code version. Robert
