i faced what i believe to be a similar problem, which was caused
by the default value of the `dired-omit-files' variable:
"^\\.?#\\|^\\.$\\|^\\.\\.$"
Changing the value of that variable to:
"^\\.\\|^#"
resulted in dired displaying things as i expect.
