On the following file

# -*- mode: cperl -*-
s/./(/e;

putting the cursor just after the opening parenthesis then typing a
closing parenthesis yields the following error:

  End of ‘s/ ... // ... /’ string/RE not found: (scan-error Unbalanced parentheses 26 29)
