What additional directory are you talking about?

But `dired-do-compress' creates .gz files (or a .tar.gz for
a directory) so that's another command from the get-go and to
unzip it one cannot even use unzip(1).
Still ... I use 'gunzip -fk' for .gz (and 'tar xfz' .tar.gz)
and I just tried it, it works as expected and there is no
"additional directory" ...
