hi Andrei

some related points :-)

* Debian woody installs emacs 20 by default.  So make sure to type
apt-get install emacs21 

and probably remove emacs20..

* also look at    http://www.emacswiki.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?EmacsForDebian
