delete -> C-d (delete-char)
backspace -> DEL (delete-backward-char)

Google is good and fine but please try C-h t and C-h i, they are not
so bad options after all, i. e. they are an example of very, very fine
documentation 8-).  Besides, EmacsWiki comes to mind as well.
