In NEWS, we have

** Abbrev has been rewritten in Elisp and extended with more
   flexibility.

This is followed by a list of Lisp-level changes.  It's not clear to me
what, if anything, has changed from the point of view of the user.
Could someone familiar with the rewrite look through abbrevs.texi and
see what needs to be changed?
