* Emacs 25rc1 unstable on macOS 10.12

Regarding the recent crashes on OSX discussed on this list on July
18th, I can confirm that it happens a few times a day on my system as
well after installing rc1.

I've checked the git repo and see no commits related to fixing this
yet. This will most likely hit all Emacs 25 users on Macs real soon so
I'm hoping the suggested patch or an alternative gets committed soon.

Thanks,

Marius K.

Does it affect the stable version of OSX, or only macOS 10.12?

Cheers,
Nico

As far as I know, there is no "stable" Emacs 25 version when using
Homebrew. The default version currently being served by brew is 24.5,
while "devel" just recently began offering 25.1-rc1.

Thanks,

Marius K.

Only 10.12 from what I've seen.

Yeah, thanks for clearing that up, I was thinking stable version of
Emacs from Homebrew obviously. My bad.

As with all timing related bugs I haven't found any way of triggering
it on purpose. On 10.12 I've also experienced one crash on Chrome
(Developer channel). When/if I experience it again and if it is
similar in nature, I'll report back as it may confirm that they
actually changed some thread semantics in 10.12.

Thanks,

Marius K.

Should we deal with this now then, or wait until macOS 10.12 becomes stable?

10.12 should be released in the autumn (unfortunately there’s no
firmer date yet). Are we likely to have a new (fixed) release of Emacs
25 within a reasonable time‐scale?

The fix is simply to enable some code that was previously GNUStep only
to run on macOS, so I don’t think it’s a big change.

And FWIW, I've been running with the suggested patch for half a day
already without any trouble, similar to the guy coming up with the
patch and the couple of guys that tested it earlier. I would really
hate it if Emacs on Mac becomes famous for crashing..

Thanks,

Marius K.

Do you mean that you'd like this fix to be included in Emacs 25.1?

Cheers,
Nico

I’ve previously asked for this and am waiting for John to respond, but
since RC1’s been cut already I don’t know if it’s too late.

Here’s the previous thread:

That's what I was wondering as well.

I also think it would be best to include it, since autumn is not too far
away (at least in the sense that the fall equinox is in September),
whereas my impression is that Emacs 25.2 could easily be further away
than that.

I initially planned to do another RC next Monday, but then I'll wait
until this a patch is applied to emacs-25.

Cheers,
