   Try hideshow in Emacs.

someone already posted some code to make "..." stand out.
that approach can be combined w/ `hs-set-up-overlay'
and fringe bitmaps to get "marginal pixel satisfaction"
craved by the OP, probably.  i haven't tried it.

if someone tries it and hideshow fails it, please let me know.
