I had the same idea some time ago. Of course such an approach is then limited to Elisp. Anyway, by coincidence I've been implementing exactly that the last days, using `pcase' patterns (see emacs-dev thread "Search Elisp buffers with pcase patterns" - comments very welcome!). Michael.
