Unable to open some files in emacs with emacs 25.3.

Ever since updating to emacs 25.3 yesterday I find that I cannot open
some of my files in emacs. This is the case in point -

 [[~/cron/boudiccas.crontab]]

On Monday that link would open the file in emacs, today, it doesn't and
the only change is the new emacs version.

So how do I fix it or get round it please?

So your problem is with org following that link?

What happens if you try to open the file "directly" (that is,
with C-x C-f or via the menu File -> Visit New File...?)

- What is the error message, if any?

- Is it specific to this file? Have you tried with another one?

- What happens if you insert the "file:" prefix, i.e,
  [[file:~/cron/boudiccas.crontab]]?

- How do you "open" the file? Is it with C-c C-o, RET, or something
  else? What happens if you call directly `M-x org-open-at-point'?

It is common and understandable that a thing or
two breaks with updates. Ironically... But you
can't make an omelet without cracking the eggs.

cross-posting, and if you de facto do it, might
as well use the forbidden method in all glory.
Cross-posting isn't always bad. Here, at least
I'd say it's OK. You can use the
Followup-To: header to narrow the ensuing
conversation, or just put both lists/groups
there as well :)

No, there is no error message but it does say in *Messages* 'Running
calligraauthor /home/boudiccas/cron/boudiccas.crontab...done', but it
never completely opens to be able to read the actual file.

Thanks Tomas for replying.

C-x C-f foo opens the file okay, but I would like to be able to open it
from the org link. I'll see what the org list says.

Why is calligraauthor running? Can you take it out of the
loop altogether?

Can you run it from the command line and see if it completes?  It
seems to pop up a window when I do that, so I'm not sure if emacs is
waiting for the application to finish before continuing.

calligraauthor is not running until it is called by emacs calling it.

Unfortunately not. calligraauthor opens very easily with no problems on
its own, and it also opens 'boudiccas.crontab' with zero problems once
calligraauthor is launched on its own.

I suspect that there is something hard-wired into the new version of
emacs which forces emacs to open up some links in calligraauthor,
instead of emacs itself, as it used to do with emacs-25.1.

When I compiled this version of emacs I used these commands in this
order -

./configure
make
sudo make install
--8<---------------cut here---------------end--------------->8---

Poor choice of words. I meant: something in emacs is calling calligraauthor.
What is that something? Find it and fix it. There is no way that that something
is built-in to emacs. Have you tried with emacs -Q?

But if it is started by emacs, emacs may be waiting for it to finish before
it continues.

I doubt that very much. This is something in your setup. Check your
.mailcap, and the variables that is used to open applications:
org-file-apps and org-file-apps-default-gnus (or -macosz or
-windowsnt, depending on your system).
