That is a valid point and it would be good if Emacs had nice tab bar
feature.
In my opinion tab bar wastes space but I'm interested in trying such
feature. Normally I switch buffers with "C-x b" (bound to
ido-switch-buffer) and sometimes I use <C-down-mouse-1> for graphical
buffer menu or "C-x C-b" (bound to buffer-menu-other-window) for the
normal textual buffer menu.
