I did the following: img = search_image_cache (f, spec, hash, foreground, background, true); if (img) printf("cached\n"); else printf("uncached\n"); And then "emacs -Q", and switching between the *scratch* buffer and the *Messages* buffer, I get: uncached uncached uncached uncached uncached uncached uncached [etc] These are from the toolbar images.
