The input method is good when, say, you want to add some simple formulas in plain text in an email. There are other use cases, though. Suppose you are writing a paper in TeX and you want to insert (the command that generates) a =C3=97 with a box around it. How do you figure out the command is called =E2=80=9C\boxtimes= =E2=80=9D? The analogue of C-x 8 RET for TeX names is helpful for this.
