Hello all.

I tried using emacs gnus newsreader. Contact with my newsserver including
authinfo works fine, but I just get 4 newsgroups. Gnus creates .newsrc-
dribble. I must have a blind spot, I don't find how to download a full list
of available newsgroup from my server. gnus-activate-new-groups won't show
up anything, neiter does A z nor A k.

Excuse me if this is a too trivial question. How do I download a full list
of newsgroups?

erch

In the *Groups* buffer press '^'. This brings up the server buffer. Now
locate your news-server and press 'RET'.

Subscribe to groups you want to read with 'u'.

2 times 'q' and they should pop up in your *Groups* buffer.

Why does this have to be so painful, you ask ? I don't know.

Should the manual in (gnus) Finding the News mention this perhaps?
Right now it only talks about foreign groups but doesn't mention `^'
which turns out to be essential.

Thanks a lot! Next step will be learning the shortcuts and setting up the
mail function. This is promising.

Oh, not so painful after all. The only painful thing for me was not finding
it in the documentation.

This could be of great help, for there I looked and didn't find it.

I was just remembered, how much time I needed, to figure this out.

BTW, while you're in the server-buffer, you may want to enable the
agent, in order to cache the news header.

Please keep notes on what you find annoying, hard, unpleasant, or all of
the above while learning Gnus. We (Gnus developers) get very few of
those reports. You may also want to subscribe to the Gnus "ding"
mailing list and to the gnu.emacs.gnus newsgroup.

I added links and info about the Server buffer in the Gnus manual, in
the getting started section.

Thanks

I forgot to mention that you can read ding through GMane over NNTP
(nntp+news.gmane.org:gmane.emacs.gnus.general). You don't have to
subscribe (but you have to confirm to post the first time) and it has
archives going quite far back.

For anyone unaware, GMane is a great resource and has most mailing lists
as newsgroups, including emacs-devel.
