Hi,
I would like to patch elpa/packages/sokoban/sokoban.el to change the
player and block color if on a target field. This makes it much easier
to see if a block is already correctly placed or not.
Comments?

Please show the commit log message you intend to use.
Also, does this warrant a NEWS entry?
Thanks.

The commit log message I was about to use is
change player and block color if on target
About a NEWS entry, I do not know. Does ELPA have a separate NEWS file?
I see some NEWS files in some individual packages, but sokoban did not
have one so far. I made an entry in the header of sokoban.el under
Commentary: , is this enough?
Thanks for looking at the patch!

In general, commit log messages should follow the format of ChangeLog
files as described in CONTRIBUTE. But maybe this is not required for
ELPA? (I thought sokoban.el was bundled with Emacs, sorry for not
looking closer.)
> About a NEWS entry, I do not know. Does ELPA have a separate NEWS file?
No, I don't think so. Again, I missed the fact that sokoban.el is an
ELPA package.
Thanks.

Indeed, we don't require it.

Determine sokoban-width and sokoban-height dynamically
This avoids hard-coding sokoban-width and sokoban-height by scanning the
level file and finding the correct values dynamically.

Looks good to me. I'd document also the (apparently) unrelated changes
included, such as the removal of sokoban-temp-buffer-name and the change
to sokoban-next-level.

How about this:
Commit message:
Determine sokoban-width and sokoban-height dynamically
This avoids hard-coding sokoban-width and sokoban-height by scanning
the level file and finding the correct values dynamically.
Unrelated additional changes:
- remove unused variable 'sokoban-temp-buffer-name'
- change sokoban-next-level to use sokoban-goto-level in order to
range-check new level number
- change sokoban-goto-level to produce a more readable error message
when level is out of range

I doubt the current sokoban.el works in XEmacs, so I'd get rid of the
XEmacs-specific code.
Other than that, looks very good,

Indeed, I don't understand why it's a good idea to make this
particular change.

I found it easier to query the values of those variables from other
windows when they were not buffer-local, but I can always make that
change for debugging and retract it afterwards. Or is there some other
trick?

I find the buffer-local-value function useful for these cases.

The easiest way is to run ielm, then attach it to the buffer with
ielm-change-working-buffer.
Andreas.
