Currently, the Emacs manual says
If you have a large amount of code in your `.emacs' file, you
should rename it to `~/.emacs.el', and byte-compile it. *Note Byte
Compilation: (elisp)Byte Compilation, for more information about
compiling Emacs Lisp programs.
