Thank you Bastien !

After
 Esc :
and entering
 Eval: (setq gnus-select-method '(nntp "news.gmane.org"))
then entering
 Esc x gnus

for the group
*: ne.general
an error appears as
Couldn't activate group ne.general: 411 No such group ne.general

Obviously there no such group :)

news.gmane.org is a mailing list → nntp gateway. For the “classic”
groups you need another news server. Check if you ISP offers such a
service. If not, there are more or less unreliable free servers,
e.g. news.aioe.org (w/o registration) or news.arcor.de (?) (I think you
need to register somehow, not sure how).

In Thunderbird, as an example, you have nntp access to
news.gmane.org ...

Yes, that's what David wanted to say. Gmane makes mailinglists
accessible via nntp. For example, the emacs-devel list is
gmane.emacs.devel. But on news.gmane.org there aren't the classical
usenet hierarchies like alt.*, comp.*, de.* and such. To read those,
you need another server.
