The pretest of 24.4 has hung on me. (This is the version from  ftp://alpha.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/pretest/emacs-24.3.90.tar.xz.)

I still have the process running and it has debugging symbols in, so
it's plausible (is it?) that I might be able to supply more information.

The hang happened, immediately following updating packages (Org and
Auctex) from GNU Elpa, while using the scroll bar thumb in the
Compile-Log buffer to look at the build warnings -- I'm not sure which
(if any) of those facts is relevant.

I had a single Emacs process running and, as I had just started it, I
can recall the commands I used, as follows (this is not meant to be a
recipe; just saying what I did):

M-x emacs-version RET
M-x gnus RET
M-x gnus-version RET
q y    ; to quit gnus
M-x list-packages
U    ; to select updatable packages for update (Org and Auctex only)
"Exectute Actions" from the Package menu

The packages build seemed to run successfully. I got a dialog box saying
that there were old versions and did I want to delete them. I said
no. (I usually keep the old for a bit in case the new doesn't work).

During the auctex build the frame had split vertically (in the sense
that there were two windows side by side) with the Packages window on
the left and the Compile-Log on the right.

I scrolled the Compile-Log window with the scroll thumb which worked
initially, then Emacs froze. Gnome displayed a dialog indicating that
the process was not responding and did I want to "Force Quit" or
"Wait". I told it to wait. C-g, ESC ESC ESC etc. have no effect.



It's been a while since I used a CLI debugger so I need a terse but
complete primer. I'm going off now to read the above resource and I will
report back if I have any success getting information out of the hung
session. I'm also open to any specific instructions.

Yes. Reading bug 15801, this seems to be the same thing.

The immediate question that occurred to me was why would it suddenly
manifest in the pretest when I haven't seen it once in the past
year. And the answer might be simple: I don't normally use the
mouse. For about a year I've been working exclusively on GNU Linux
systems and I interact with them using the keyboard. But during the last
couple of weeks I've been working at a job where we use Windows machines
and all my old mousing habits have come flooding back! Today might quite
possibly be the first time I've used a scrolling thumb in Emacs.

Inspired by the original bug report for bug 15801 I scrolled the Gnus
summary buffer up and down a few times with the scrolling thumb and
almost immediately hung Emacs 24.3.50 built from trunk in late February
(revision: 116611).

So I can hang the pretest and 24.3.50 moderately easily. (I did a few
tests and it doesn't always hang quite so fast as in the first two
cases, but it does after a bit).

I haven't been able to get Emacs 24.3.1 (x86_64-redhat-linux-gnu, GTK+
Version 3.8.2) of 2013-08-14 to hang in this way, but I'm not sure
whether it's because I was insufficiently persistent or if it doesn't
have the bug.

As there where no selections involved, I don't think so.
Note that it is normal for Emacs to be in pselect when it does nothing, so the similarity of the backtraces is no indication.  This looks like Emacs is just waiting for X events.

I'm sorry, I wasn't able to fully follow the discussion in bug 15801 or
understand which was the right patch, so I haven't tested yet.

But I see that Jarek updated the patch today and that Stefan applied a
version of it in "emacs-24", so I can just rebuild from Bazaar. But is
"emacs-24" the same as trunk, or is that the name of the branch that
will be 24.4?

Okay. I have built from the branch "emacs-24" (revno: 117000) which has
Stefan's version of Jarek's patch (revno: 116996), and I cannot get
it to freeze after considerable use of the scrolling thumbs. (Two trials
of five to ten minutes of using the scroll thumbs.)

I also built trunk (revno: 117005) (which does not have Jarek's patch in
it) and in three out of three trials using emacs -Q it
froze within less than a minute of using the scroll thumbs.

So, tentatively, I would say that Jarek's patch fixes (or works around?)
the bug.
