bug#16181: 23.1; losing track of point

(I'm going through old bug reports that unfortunately got no response at
the time.)

I've tried to reproduce this problem in Emacs 28, but things seem to be
working as expected for me.  Are you still seeing this problem in more
recent versions of Emacs?
