I don't understand the code but I'm having the same problem with
leftover mouse highlight turds in the Gnus Summary buffer that I had
on Windows in October (see
http://www.shootybangbang.com/redisplay-mouse-face-bug.png) on my
GNU/Linux system too, now.  Installing your patch gets rid of them; I
haven't seen one since.
