dired-do-shell-command's docstring doesn't mention the variable
that gives the defaults that get shown in the minibuffer.

Also when one hits ! on a .jpg, a different program is seen than with
a .JPG. [At least on debian.]

dired-do-shell-command from dired-aux.el doesn't mention the variables
dired-guess-shell-alist-default and dired-guess-shell-alist-user
because these variables are defined in a separate package dired-x.el.

The case-sensitivity of file extensions is controlled by the variable
dired-guess-shell-case-fold-search. Last week I sent a patch to
emacs-devel that makes this variable customizable, but seems my patch
has gone into the deeps of /dev/null.

There was a temporary problem in the emacs-devel mailing list.
I believe it is fixed now. If you sent a message and did not see
it come through the list, please send it again.

Except that everything sent not only to emacs-devel, but apparently to
emacs-pretest-bug and other mailing lists as well, seems to
consistently come through with a four day delay.

Sincerely,

Luc.

Perhaps the mail machine had a backlog. If so, it is mostly gone now.
Your message came through in 20 minutes or so.
