hi there

sometimes i accidentally kill or rename the scratch-buffer. how can i 
protect this?

is there a way to hook into kill-buffer and rename-buffer?

GNU Emacs 21 on up will recreate the scratch buffer if you just
revisit that buffer name:  C-x b (or M-x switch-to-buffer) *scratch*
