PS - to previous post

Should that work in a read only buffer... like say, an article buffer
in gnus?  Seems like it should since it does not make changes.  And in
fact it does work in an info buffer which is also read only. 

It does not seem to work in a gnus `article' buffer, here.  It leaves
this in *Message* buffer:
  call-interactively: Buffer is read-only: #<buffer *Article gmane.emacs.help*>
