Hey. What happened to 'calc' in the pretest? Calc was installed under CVS as
of 21.1.50. Is there a reason it isn't in the pretest? I installed the version
that was distributed under 21.1.50 and it worked fine.

Kevin (AKA missing calc)

Hi,
when doing
M-x customize-group RET fancy-splash-screen RET

I actually don't get a customizable option for the most important
thing: how to turn it off.

I consider that an omission.

SPC in custom buffers currently always scrolls the buffer. I do not
think this is the expected behaviour by most users.

A common use of SPC (web browsers, w32 programs) is to "push the button"
when keyboard focus is on the button. I think that would be better - at
least when focus is on a button.

Sunday's GNU Emacs CVS snapshot, Sun, 2005 Mar 13
GNU Emacs 22.0.50.22 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.6.2)

vrs

Friday's GNU Emacs CVS snapshot, Fri, 2005 Mar 18
GNU Emacs 22.0.50.26 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.6.2)

both started with the same, long .emacs file

Deletion in RMAIL slows after an instance of GNU Emacs has been
running for several days. The time to delete the same 50 messages,
all marked with `d', is double in the five day older instance than in
the newer instance.

This has been going on for months, but I have not been able to find
the bug. That is why I have not reported this earlier. I cannot find
anything wrong with Emacs!

There are no memory leaks that I can find and the backtraces are
nearly the same, being different only in addresses.

When deleting 50 messages, I found that in the older instance, each
call to `rmail-summary-goto-msg' takes nearly twice the Elapsed Time
as in the newer instance of Emacs,

Here are the five most frequently called functions from when I
instrumented `rmail-summary-' using `elp' and deleted 50 messages (the
same messages from the same RMAIL file each time):

older

The time sink is `rmail-summary-goto-msg'.

I profiled one deletion on that function. `rmail-summary-goto-msg'
continues as the time sink. The function takes longer over time.

Unfortunately, I am now lost. On glancing at the source for
`rmail-summary-goto-msg' I don't see anything obviously wrong. What
should I do next?

I normally do not run an instance of Emacs so long, since I like to
update and run new CVS versions. But I will keep this older version
sitting on my desktop ready for any tests you might suggest.

Here is the backtrace for the older instance. In both instances, I
went to the most recent message, # 247, then to the previous message,
then to the next (i.e., most recent message) again, then suspended the
instance and ran `bt'.

except that RMAIL deletions in the older instance take longer and

Something has broken in `mark-diary-entries' such that (setq
mark-diary-entries-in-calendar t) and related no longer work
correctly. It seems to be setting point to the beginning of the
calendar buffer (I think the previous behavior was to leave it on
the current date.)

It seems that on w32, if HOME is not defined we default it to C:/.
Wouldn't it make more sense to default it to $USERPOFILE (if set) which on XP
seems to typically point to C:/Documents and Files/<user> which is about as
close to a "home directory" as it gets?

This patch might appeal to people migrating from XEmacs, who want to
colourise their mode lines. It might be nice to have these faces
available, even if they're not visibly different from mode-line, by
default.

* Fix for inconsistent (/ DIVIDEND DIVISOR &rest DIVISORS)

Some time ago there was a thread on division being inconsistent when
floats were involved. I dont know what the outcome of that discussion
was, but it did occur to me that the simplest fix would be to multiply
the divisors before doing the division. Here is code for that
(src/data.c)...

DEFUN ("/", Fquo, Squo, 2, MANY, 0,
doc: /* Return first argument divided by all the remaining arguments.
The arguments must be numbers or markers.
usage: (/ DIVIDEND DIVISOR &rest DIVISORS) */)
     (nargs, args)
     int nargs;
     Lisp_Object *args;
{
  if (nargs == 2) {
    return arith_driver (Adiv, nargs, args);
  }
  else {
    Lisp_Object divArgs[2];
    divArgs[0] = args[0];
    divArgs[1] = arith_driver (Amult, nargs-1, args+1);
    return arith_driver (Adiv, 2, divArgs);
  }
}

I've left nargs==2 as a special case for efficiency, because it wont
change the existing behavior for 2 arguments, and because 2 arguments is
by far the most common, and perhaps only, usage I see in the cvs *.el
files.

Since several days I observe an dired alignment failure when trying to
copy a file pressing `C'. Point sits on `.emacs.test', press

    C .emacs.test2 RET

and all spaces are collapsed to just-one-space (cf. attachment). Press
`g' and proper re-alignemnt will happen.

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

I run Emacs in a Putty terminal window (xterm emulation), and when I
paste the contents of certain web pages I copied from Mozilla, Emacs
stops responding. For an example, select the entire 11th paragraph in
the body of the article at
http://www.guardian.co.uk/elsewhere/journalist/story/0,7792,1152570,00.html
(starting with "It all ran a bit out of control"). Paste it into Emacs
(shift-insert in putty). Emacs stops responding until I press C-g. It
looks like the dashes ("...were coming to see me -- everyone knows
everyone in this town -- and saying...") are the cause of the problem,
because pasting any other text in the paragraph is fine. This happens
regardless of the buffer's mode. It also happens in other terminal
emulators (SecureCRT 3.1 in Linux console emulation, for example), but
not in Windows Emacs (21.1.1, i386-msvc-nt5.1.2600), where the dashes
appear as regular hyphens ("-") in the pasted text.

For comparison, when inserting the same text, vim will also replace the
dashes with "-", and XEmacs will simply stop pasting the text when it
hits them, but not freeze.

A few months ago, I found out that Knoppix included some non-free
software, and the developer said he didn't want to change that.

If he has changed his policies in the meantime, please tell me; that
would be good news. But otherwise, please do not recommend the use of
Knoppix on GNU mailing lists. Please recommend only entirely free
software.

(I am not on the help-gnu-emacs list; someone forwarded me a couple of
messages on this thread.)

Forgive the intrusion, this is perhaps the wrong list for a feature
request.

It would be nice to have a way to identity an Emacs variable in texinfo
sources such that when Emacs Info renders the page it can make the
variable name clickable in order to customize it. (I know texinfo is
not limited to documenting Emacs, so this would probably be a secret
handshake of some sort that Emacs could parse.)

I find myself writing docs that often say things like "if you wish to
enable this feature, customize the variable `foobar'.

I know I can put point on the string, do `C-h v' and then click on
customize, but such a feature would make customizable variables stand
out and the documentation would therefore render the information in a
more efficient way (specially for new users).

Thanks,

Do you know of such a package? I was not able to find any.
If there exist some, I don't want to break it. Otherwise I don't
believe those variables are useful.

Actually, I ment rmail-output function from rmailout.el file, but
after consideration I agree that I used that functionality so often
only because there was no better way to get attached files from the
email. Normally I don't need to export emails to files.

OK, this is how I see it.

When we convert the email to babyl format, we can do some MIME-related
processing on it, for example: all text/* bodyparts may be
transfer-encoding (quoted-printable and base64) decoded, PGP/GPG
signatures verified, PGP/GPG decryption done, header fields of type
=?...?B?...?= decoded (RFC 2047) and unfolded (RFC 2822), etc.
This needs to be done once. No information is lost in this step. No
structure information is lost either.

When we show the message, I'm not interested in following things:
* MIME-related boundaries;
* Header fields of most entities;
* Entities of some types (multipart/alternative(text/html),
pgp-signature, etc);
* Entities of types image, audio, video, application. Instead, I would
like to see a button [Save as...] which will save an entity to file;
* Entities of types image/jpeg, image/png, etc. may be displayed right
here in the buffer.

Granted, we can delete boundaries and header field we don't want to
see, but what to do with big bodyparts like attached images? Where to
store them so that the user does not normally see them, but can
access them anytime in the future?

Also, please note that if we delete any MIME-related information, we
will not be able to parse the message again later. Well, we will need
some other parser. This way we invent another format. I don't like
this, that's why I don't agree that we should delete something we
don't want to see on the screen.
As I proposed before, I would like to hide the information using the
"invisible" property. I'm open to suggestions.

Another problem is that we currently brake the email by inserting
"simplified" header between original header and the message body (in
rmail-reformat-message function). After this is done, MIME-parsing
function does not work anymore.

I would very like to hear your ideas.
Thanks to anybody in advance.

In the new CVS, <S-backspace> runs the command kill-whole-line.
I'm hitting it about twice a day by accident, confusing me.
Can we reconsider this recent keybinding addition?

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

I started emacs in gdb as follows:
  $ gdb /usr/bin/emacs
  (gdb) run -q --no-site-file

Then I created a second frame with: C-x 5 2

I move the new frame to a different workspace (it is important
to move it to a different workspace as moving it to a
different viewport in window managers that support both
doesn't cause the crash). At this point I have two frames both
displaying the *scratch* buffer.

In the new frame I load ~/pp.el with: C-x C-f ~/pp.el RET
Contents of ~/pp.el:

-- start of pp.el --
(progn
  (setq focus-follows-mouse nil)
  (select-frame-set-input-focus
   (window-frame (get-buffer-window "*scratch*" t))))
-- end of pp.el --

Now I move to the end of pp.el and evaluate the lisp
expression with: M-> C-x C-e

This causes Emacs to die. In gdb from where emacs was started
I see the following output:

X protocol error: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) on protocol request 42
Program exited with code 0106.

I use the metacity window manager. I have been able to
reproduce the exact same crash with CVS version of emacs that
I checked out on 2002-12-25. That version reports its version
as 21.3.50.3.

I came across this problem while using ILISP which is an
interface to various implementations of Common Lisp. I
minimized the code that needed to be run to crash emacs.

Hope this helps,
Satyaki

(Sorry for the double post - just found the correct newsgroup).

I'm new to Xemacs and want to know if there is a way to undo Auto-Fill
mode after I've saved my doc and reopened it.

Basically, I want to be able to work on a document in autofill-mode,
save as is, multiple times. Then when the doc is completely done, open
it, remove all the artificial line breaks and resave as a simple text
file.

I don't know much about LaTex or TeX, would they be more efficient for
this purpose?

Thanks,
Elaine Sims

I noticed that Emacs is in pre-release. We expect to release a beta of
mh-e 6.2 at the end of the month. I assume that the pre-release means
that only bug fixes are allowed, but if this isn't strictly the case,
I was wondering if I'd be able to update mh-e when we're ready. It's a
pretty big release (release notes enclosed), but is limited to just
the mh-e files so it should be little or no risk to the rest of the
  project.

* Changes in mh-e 6.2

This is a major minor release which includes a lot of new features
including improved MIME handling, speedbar folder browsing, and
indexed searching. In this version, mh-e runs under XEmacs and
compiles clean under all supported platforms.

** New Features in mh-e 6.2

*** Speedbar

There is now support for the speedbar. Try "M-x speedbar" (closes SF
#503727).

Press the middle mouse button on the `+' icons to open a folder,
middle mouse button on a folder name to open the folder. Folders with
unseen messages are shown in bold, so this is a handy way to browse
new messages that you have filed with procmail or slocal.

See the new customization variable `mh-large-folder,' which controls
when the speedbar asks for how many messages to scan when opening a
large folder.

*** Indexed search

Interoperability with swish, glimpse, and namazu has been added to
enable lightening-fast searches of your mail. If none of these are
present, grep is used. Try "F i (mh-index-search)".

For more information, read the documentation for the functions
`mh-swish-execute-search,' `mh-namazu-execute-search,' or
`mh-glimpse-execute-search' depending on your preferred indexing
program to see what kind of setup is needed to generate the index.
You'll first need to run "F i" or load "mh-thread" to read the
documentation.

*** Threading

Use "T t (mh-toggle-threads)" to view the threads in the folder. Use
it again to return to a non-threaded view.

*** Brief help

Use "? (mh-help)" and "X ? (mh-prefix-help)," where X is a prefix
character, for a brief synopsis in the minibuffer of frequently used
commands. In the MH-Letter or MH-Pick buffers, use "C-c ? (mh-help)"
(closes SF #493740).

*** Folder keymap shared by show buffer

You can now use the MH-Folder mode commands from the MH-Show buffer.
Because of this, the MH-Show buffer is now read-only (closes SF
#527946) and you now have to use "M (mh-modify)" to edit a message.

*** Better scanning

You no longer have to modify your scan format if your folders have
more than 9999 messages in them. If you've only modified your scan
format file to allow for the wider message numbers, consider removing
your modifications of `mh-scan.*-regexp' and `mh-cmd-note', set the
new customization variable `mh-adaptive-cmd-note' to t, and
`mh-scan-format-file' to its default (t).

You may still want the updated format files for running MH commands
outside of mh-e, but these changes will simplify your mh-e
configuration considerably.

*** X-Face

mh-e now displays the content of the X-Face header field in the From
field. When sending a message, an X-Face field is appended to the
header if it doesn't already exist and "~/.face" is present. See the
new customization variables `mh-show-use-xface' and `mh-x-face-file'
(closes SF #480770).

mh-e depends on the external x-face package found in
ftp://ftp.jpl.org/pub/elisp/ to do this.

*** Graphical smileys

Smiley's are now converted to cute little images. See the new
customization variable `mh-graphical-smileys-p.'

*** Text emphasis

ASCII formatting is now converted to the appropriate font. For
example, *bold* appears in bold, /italic/ appears in italic, etc. See
the new customization variables `mh-decode-mime' and
`mh-graphical-emphasis-p.'

*** Attachment handling

Inline attachments are now displayed. Regular attachments appear as
buttons in show buffer. Use "K TAB (mh-next-button)" or "K SHIFT-TAB
(mh-prev-button)" to cycle through these buttons. Use "K v
(mh-folder-toggle-mime-part)" to view, "K o
(mh-folder-save-mime-part)" to save one part or "M-x
mh-store-mime-parts" to save all parts, or "K i
(mh-folder-inline-mime-part)" to view the attachment inline.

See the new customization variable `mh-decode-mime' for additional
information. In additiona, see the new customization variable
`mh-store-mime-parts-default-directory.'

HTML documents can be viewed inline if Gnus v5.9 and w3 or w3m lisp
packages are present. Set the customization variable
`mm-text-html-renderer' accordingly (closes SF #453352).

*** Quoted-printable handling

Quoted-printable body parts are now decoded.

*** More choices for `mh-yank-from-start-of-msg'

Historically, if this variable was t, the entire message, with full
headers would be included and every line would begin with
`mh-ins-buf-prefix.' This usage is deprecated in favor of the setting
`supercite' below. The default has been changed to `attribution.' The
following symbols are now understood:

`body': yank the message minus the header.

`supercite': include the entire message, with full headers. This also
causes the invocation of `sc-cite-original' without the setting of
`mail-citation-hook', now deprecated practice.

`autosupercite': do as for `supercite' automatically when show buffer
matches the message being replied-to.

`attribution': yank the message minus the header and add a simple
attribution line at the top.

`autoattrib': do as for `attribution' automatically when show buffer
matches the message being replied-to.

There is a new customization variable called
`mh-extract-from-attribution-verb' which is used for attribution which
provides a method for setting a different language.

*** Use Gnus mml instead of mhn

When inserting attachments into a message draft, Gnus mml directives
are now used instead of mhn directives. One beneficial side-effect of
this is that attachments can now appear inline as well as separate.

The new customization variable `mh-compose-insertion' controls whether
Gnus or mhn is used to insert MIME message directives in messages
(default: 'gnus, if the mml library exists).

*** Content-Type now obtained automatically

The value of the Content-Type no longer needs to be entered by the
user.

*** Attachments automatically included upon send

You no longer have to run "C-c C-e (mh-edit-mhn)" before sending a
message with attachments--this is done automatically when you send the
message with "C-c C-c (mh-send-letter)". There is, however, a new key
binding "C-c C-m m (mh-mml-to-mime)" which is analogous to "C-c C-e
(mh-edit-mhn)".

** New Variables in mh-e 6.2

New customization variables not mentioned earlier include:

*** mh-tool-bar-reply-3-buttons

Non-nil means use three buttons for reply commands in tool-bar. If you
have room on your tool-bar because you are using a large font, you may
set this variable to expand the single reply button into three buttons
that won't lead to minibuffer prompt about who to reply to.

** Bug Fixes in mh-e 6.2

*** mh-delete-msg, mh-refile-msg, mh-undo

Mandrake Linux includes XEmacs initialization code that binds
`transient-mark-mode' which causes problems in mh-e. These problems
have been fixed (closes SF #541915).

*** mh-edit-again

This would sometimes yield a read-only buffer. This has been fixed
(closes SF #624283).

*** mh-next-undeleted-msg, mh-previous-undeleted-msg

If there are no more undeleted messages the point remains at its
original position and a message is produced (closes SF #494304).

*** mh-refile-msg, mh-write-msg-to-file

These functions stomped on the variables that held the name of the
last file and folder respectively for the other function. This has
been fixed so that the last folder or file name is preserved (closes
SF #580772).

*** mh-region-to-sequence

If the region in MH-Folder was set with "C-x h (mark-whole-buffer)",
you couldn't perform operations on all of the messages as you would
expect. This has been fixed (closes SF #621632).

*** mh-reply

Performing an undo the first thing after replying would blank out the
entire draft. Now just the insertion of the yanked message is undone
leaving the header and signature intact for additional editing (closes
SF #623693).

*** mh-subject-thread-to-sequence

Make 'subject sequence a real one, exported to MH. This means you can,
for example, mh-forward it. But it also shows up with a mark in the
scan output (closes SF #489445).

Ok to install this? Does FSF have papers for Steve Youngs? Maybe it
is too trivial to require papers, it is cut'n'paste of the existing
Galeon code.

* Suggestions for mode-line-format changes

Now that the mode-line-position information has been moved
from the end of the mode line, and vc-mode is moved there too,
the space between the buffer name and the mode-line-modes
has become pretty crowded.

Now, if you enable display-time and display-battery,
which adds time and battery status, e.g. 15:57 [95%],
to that part of the mode line as well, it's a total mess.

My suggestion is to move the global-mode-string to the
end of the mode line; the cost is that the time and
battery status isn't always shown (especially in
partial width windows).

Also, I would like to suggest an alternative presentation
of the position, line number, and column number.

The current presentation is like

        L1 C0 Top
        L172 C23 43%
        L341 C0 Bot

which I find quite annoying to look at.

I've been using the following alternative for quite some
time, and I find it much easier on the eyes:

        Top (1,0)
        43% (172,23)
        Bot (341,0)

If only one of line-number-mode or column-number-mode is enabled,
this doesn't make much sense, so I use the following formats:

        Top L1
        43% C23
        Bot L341

To try the suggested format, just execute this (and toggle column and
line number mode as you like):

(let ((help-echo "mouse-1: select (drag to resize), mouse-2: delete others, mouse-3: delete"))
  (setq-default mode-line-position
    `((-3 . ,(propertize "%p" 'help-echo help-echo))
      (line-number-mode
       ((column-number-mode
	 (,(propertize " (%l,%c)" 'help-echo help-echo))
	 (,(propertize " L%l" 'help-echo help-echo))))
       ((column-number-mode
	 (,(propertize " C%c" 'help-echo help-echo))))))))

After using this ~20 years it dawns on me: The modeline of a buffer
with an associated file and that with no associated file look the
same. Bad.

Buffer A has maximal autosaving, you name it, cutting edge in safety,
all because it is associated with a file.

Buffer B will go bye bye when you quit emacs, no matter what you put
in it.

Their modelines will never tell you that, gotta hit C-x C-b and look around.

It seems B should have something in the modeline close to the left
edge reminding one about the situation.

Yes I know that most are *blabla*, but I'm talking about ones I create
with C-x b blabla. OK, I don't do that too much, but that's not the point.

The point is that the modeline tells you all the little stuff. The
most important thing, the fact that this buffer will go bye bye
without a trace is not mentioned there!

* Integrate Tramp

Finally, I'd like to integrate Tramp into Emacs. How is the
procedure? Do I just commit something or do I post it here for
inspection?

Without further instructions, I would commit lisp/net/tramp.el and
lisp/net/tramp-vc.el for the code and man/tramp.texi for the
documentation.

There is also tramp_ja.texi for a Japanese version of the manual and
tramp-util.el which contains just one short function, tramp-compile,
as a remote analog of `compile'. These should not be committed, I
think.

At the moment, tramp.el contains a version number (the $Id$
keyword). I gather that you're not happy with having version numbers
in Lisp files. But I think it would be useful to continue to support
a version of Tramp which is not bundled with Emacs. Then people can
try out new Tramp features without having to fetch the most recent
Emacs version from CVS. Advice?
